Safeguards when using Social Media

In Identity Theft, Internet on February 3, 2011 at 6:00 am

I recently read a Great Article in Yahoo Finance entitled, “What Your FACEBOOK Profile May be Telling Thieves“.  The article was written by Jennifer Waters of MarketWatch

The article discussed:  Identity Theft, Facebook’s Popularity,  and How thieves are using our Facebook information to unlock our identities.

The article provided the following Safeguards when using social media:

  1. DO NOT LIST:  Exact Date of Birth, Address, Phone Numbers, or Email Address.
  2. Use the Privacy features to control who sees your personal information.
  3. Limit information about your activities (parties, vacations, etc.,)
  4. Don’t forget the items you post are both Public and Permanent.
  5. Know the four (4) types of Facebook/Social Media Users:  Friends, Outsiders, Businesses, & Enemies.
  6. Know those who send you friend request(s).  Investigate him/her if you don’t know them.
  7. Beware of seemingly harmless Quizzes and Games.
  8. Consider the consequence(s) of the information you share online.

Although these safeguards specifically made reference to Facebook, they should be observed with the usage of all social networking site.

Fabulously frugal,
